Sequel of doom

Cleared of the Murder had a finished sequel.

For about a week.

While I perused Perfect Imagination for a beta, because honestly, one does not harass a beta after two years of complete silence.

And then my hard disk crashed.

All stories could have been salvaged either from my webmail Sent folder or from people who received them and were able to send them back to me.

Except for the sequel.

Sequel that was first written on paper and lost during moving. Sequel that was then written digitally and was lost with hard-disk crash.

Apparently, a sequel that is not meant to be read.

Killing the beloved

Beloved o-fic character sadly departed.

*sniff*

We lived together for about three years. He struggled to die ever since he had been created and finally his wish has come true.

*sniff*

It does not make it much easier to cope though.

Our life together )
Fourth, The Beloved changes the world to save his daughter and finally everybody, who was there in the beginning, dies. (The story left for the Karel Capek's Award today with assurances of two ex-judges that it has potential to come among the top ten)

*crosses fingers*

Thanks to [info]5_for_five for making me write so much this autumn. The challenge and ladies therein are very motivating and I'm grateful for all their support.

Strangely enough, the fact that I grabbed a chance to talk to our Prime Minister deeply impressed my ex-boss-from-Hell. He wrote me three emails requesting more and more details about it. So I indulged him.

*sigh*

Wishing he would respect my ideas rather than my mostly random exploitation of luck.

At least until our last mutual papers are out.

Categories with set votes by now:

All, but DH-compliant.

What I very much miss in the list of nominees is Prisoners of Azkaban, Probationary Diaries August 2009, Prisoners #19-09-1979 and #09-01-1960 by [info]juno_magic.

*sigh* Apparently, not enough people share my opinion in this.

Faust in my life

My beloved o-fic returned from a beta read battered. *sniff*

But one comment made me smile:

This direct reference to Faust is perfect, but grammatically you cannot use this expression in Czech even though it's verbatim.

Eh?

1. I have never read Faust and only have a vague knowledge of the kind of powerplay Mephistopheles orchestrates.

2. Do I write like Goethe? Wow!

3. To Hell with grammar. I'm going to keep my Faustian reference in no matter what and bend the story to make it evident that it is (now) deliberate.

The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So ask me something you want to know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you.

It's everywhere and I didn't resist and asked. So, retaliate.

Slytherin to the deepest core

Today, we were among the first cars to arrive to a car accident on a highway.

I didn't stop to help.

I didn't see the accident itself, nor heard the crash, but our car was hidden behind and next to a van and a truck. When the van started to break rather drastically, and then disappeared to the right, I thought the driver had a phone call or was drunk. He passed the crash site. I wanted to pass as well, but other cars squeezed me. A posh, white Volvo stopped in the left lane next to me and the driver jumped out.

Only then did I realise that there was no police or ambulance there.

And I still did not stop.

All I could think of was how to get through the commotion and take my children away to safety.

Not for a moment did I spare a single thought that those people might need my help. That came later. Some two kilometers later.

At the moment, I could only think of how to take my people home safely before someone slammed into us from behind and harmed my babies.

I didn't care for those people in those cars one bit.

When we finally made our way out of the place, there were maybe ten other people putting their gloves on and at least two were on the phone.

There were two dead and two injured, the news says. And I didn't help.

I'm sorry.

Last night, I hunted internet for a name for my ofic character. Google search of her parents' first names revealed several French Facebook pages, but the specific search for the father's name and surname returned a deceased Irish writer. Imagine my surprise, when I clicked on his biography and found that his last wife was a fellow writer called what I would pronounce Alice - the name of mother in my ofic.

Just how original can one get today?

The story with both their names is being edited and will be published on 26 November. The names stay. But the newly appeared daughter will not be called Karen as in RL. No way! It is too intrusive to write fiction about real people, albeit inadvertently.

Do I dare to join the magnificent writing help at [info]5_for_five?

I have been thinking the whole week. It might drive me and motivate me to write, but I fear failure. Terribly. It is twelve weeks after all. With all the usual RL time requirements, plus an extra part-time job, plus kids starting school this year. Will I make it?

Things that would get written and counted:

1. Popularization articles from Science in Fantasy series (just one to go, really).

2. Cross-over between HP and Asimov's Foundation universe.

3. Ofic currently known as Christ.

4. Ofic currently known as Magical Forensics 4.

5. Sequel to Cleared of the Murder which was written on paper once upon a time and got lost in household action.

Wouldn't it be simply marvelous if I got this done? It would.

I'll risk it and commit to writing. Seriously. It will require an Excel sheet and I'm on.

Story rec

The Fine Art of Fine Print by [info]mundungus42 is a HG/SS story featuring a villain of Dumbledorian proportions with Umbridgian intentions, innovative magic, strong Ron and intense romance.

My imagination was first captured by fantastic research of novel magic. Done by Hermione, of course. It is very rare in fanfiction that research would be real and true to its principle and not reduced to reading books in dusty libraries. This story gives a captivating insight into particle theory, explains Rowling's world the way cannon never could, but evidently used and brings in new technology that is instrumental throughout the story. The way magical science is presented here is similar to Ladder by [info]ubiquirk, intriguing and real. However, it is more tightly woven into plot here, not only in its repercussions as in The Gilded Cage, Selling Snape or A Murder of Crows, but it involves actual true research and application of research in surprising and unexpected ways - exactly as real research. The facts and logic hold together throughout the story.

Molly Weasley was a big surprise in this. [info]mundungus42 exaggerated her cannon characteristics only a tiny bit, she brought her to a life situation most mothers find themselves with their children leaving the nest, tipped her over the edge and created a believable villain. Her good intentions pave her path directly to hell, naturally. Especially, as she dared to cross dear Severus in a sneaky, positively Slytherin way.

Ron is a Minister of Magic in this one, and he is so good that one actually feels that it is the right person in the right place. He is a much better candidate than Arthur Weasley, who often gets saddled with the post in fanfics. Ron has flair, nonchalance and cunning to truly represent the wizarding world.

Romance between Hermione and Severus happens in this story. It is not banged on reader's head, it is not forced on them. It happens as a direct consequence of a completely magical, logical and intriguing plot true to the characters and the world they live in. After all, they are first and foremost people and this story is very humane.

I'm honoured (she knows why)!

Lots of things happened since that eventful evening in winter, but seeing "my precious" in print is not one of them. It will be included this year, and that's as specific as the editor would go. However, it seems that his magazine is much more interested in articles than in fiction. After all, articles make up for 60% of the content. I offered him six topics he might deem interesting in hope he would pick one, and imagine my shock when he asked for all of them straight away without ever seeing a single piece of text from me.

Well, that bit is entirely untrue, because he printed an exclusive interview with Christopher Paolini that I initiated and subsequently translated and he also printed two of my letters to the magazine commenting on their texts - which were, of course, facts that I pointed out on the back of my business card.

So five 10000-characters-long are written (one with [info]saschia), two have already been published, and my editor wants the series to continue until the end of the year. It is called Science in Fantasy, and I actually reported the articles as popularisation of science at work. Daring, but maybe we should not be so serious about ourselves anyway. I also did another Paolini interview for the magazine, under my name this time, not as an editor of a fan site, as Brisingr was just about to come out in the Czech Rep. It was a pain, because I have not read the book (still) and am not interested in the series any more. However, there should be benefits. Hopefully in form of getting the public know my name and perhaps even interested in what I have to say, which will bring some income.

Because I would so very much like to keep this writing hobby. But as it takes so much time that I cannot dedicate to my family, it must at least produce ways to pay for skiing for example.
